GRAMMAR ( 3eme ): THE DEFECTIVE VERBS (can, must, may)

I. GENERAL RULES WITH THE DEFECTIVE VERBS ( can, must, may)

1- The defective verbs do not have ‘to' as an infinitive mark before the verb.

Exemple

  • to speak

  • to eat

  • can

  • must

  • may

2-They are not followed by ‘to'

Exemple

  • Ali wants to go to village,

  • Ali can go to village

3-They don't take ‘s' at the third person singular in the simple present

Exemple

  • he eats

  • he goes 

  • he can

  • he must

  • he may

4- They don't need do, does or did at the negative, interrogative and interro-negative forms

Exemple

  • I do not speak

  • does she speak?

  • I cannot (can't)

  • can I ?

  • can we not?

5-They don't exist in all the tenses. In that case we replace them by their equivalents.
